We’re all at home for the foreseeable future and now, more than ever, self-care is essential. Most of us have less time than we had before because we’re simultaneously balancing our kids’ education, home upkeep, and work. But, I think all of us will go insane if we don’t take at least a bit of time each week to relax in a bath with a glass of wine, watch bits of a romcom while wearing a face mask, or just moisturizing those hand sanitizer-ravaged hands.
I asked one of my favorite people, Essie Cohen of Essie Cohen Makeup (@essiecohenmakeup), to pull together a list of her favorite affordable self-care items. I also included a few of my own. Pick one or a few to try and commit to giving yourself a Me Break a few times a week.
Eye Treatments
We all need a good eye cream, and Essie swears by Honest Beauty’s organic and affordable option.
Love the cooling and de-puffing magic of an eye mask? Essie’s pick are those Bliss foil masks, while I always pick up those Holler and Glow masks every time I’m at Target.
Face Masks
Essie really came through in this category. Need some hydration? Both the Mighty Marshmallow Whipped Mask and the overnight What a Melon mask by Bliss are for you. In need of a detox? Check out that Honest Company Mud Mask.
I’ve become a huge fan of the sheet mask, and this multi-step one from Julep is super hydrating.
Mighty Marshmallow Whipped Face Mask, $16 Julep Triple Quench Sheet Mask (2-pack), $12.99 Honest Beauty Detox Mud Mask, $20.49 What A Melon Overnight Mask, $12.99
Serums
Looking for an affordable serum? Essie recommends the moisturizing Neutrogena Hydro Boost with hyaluronic acid. If you want something with a retinol, I use the CeraVe Serum and love it.
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Serum, $17.99 CeraVe Retinol Serum, $16.99
Face Oils
The best face oils absorb quickly and don’t leave an oily residue on your face. Essie recommends the Honest Beauty organic face oil, while I’ve tried and loved the Pixi Overnight Retinol Oil.
Honest Beauty Organic Face Oil, $27.99 Pixi Overnight Retinol Oil, $24.49
Face Creams
Essie is a huge fan of Weleda Skin Food. It comes in both the original super rich formula and a lighter version for oilier skin.
Need a super hydrating night cream? I love this incredibly affordable one from CeraVe.
Ultra Rich Skin Food, $18.99 Light Skin Food, $18.99 CeraVe Night Cream, $13.99
Hand Creams
Our hands are taking a beating from the constant washing and sanitizing. I like to use Neutrogena’s Norwegian Hand Cream throughout the day and good ol’ Aquaphor right before bed. And, these Holler and Glow hydrating gloves are great to use while you’re doing a face mask.
Aquaphor, $4.59 Neutrogena Hand Cream, $3.99 Holler and Glow Gloves, $3.99
Those are our picks! Next week, Essie is going to share her favorite drug store makeups.

How do we use these products together? And in what order? Do I put on the oil and cream together, for example? Or rotate?
