PILLOW TALK

by Michelle

Good pillows can be expensive, but in the grand scheme of things, they’re a relatively inexpensive way to dress up your home without chucking pieces of furniture that you’re not that into anymore. I like to mix more expensive pillows with inexpensive purchases to make the splurges feel like they’re being balanced out a bit.

Below are a list of my favorite places for pillows online and my favorite pillows available right now at each shop.

The Citizenry

My window seat in my husband’s office, with the Amer Leather pillow from The Citizenry and the Thea pillow from Lulu and Georgia.

The Citizenry is a favorite e-commerce site of mine because of its commitment to sustainability and ethically-sourced items. Everything they curate is authentic and gorgeous, and I especially love their pillows. They also offer oversized lumbar pillows that are just the best I’ve seen, albeit pricey. I also appreciate that their inventory of items isn’t overwhelming to cull through; it’s all good stuff but not an endless catalog.

My most recent pillow purchase was their Amer Leather Pillow, which is perfect in my husband’s office (see above).

Anthropologie

Anthropologie is the place for whimsy, and its pillow offerings follow suit. With the exception of some designer pillows they sell, their pillows are also relatively well-priced (i.e., largely in the $50-$100 range). I’m trying to keep myself from buying the Cerise lumbar pillow (below) for my daughter’s room.

West Elm is my online jam for affordable, well-made pillows. Most are under $50, which is a steal (note: you’ll often have to buy the insert separately). And, they recently started selling pillow sets. I have their Mongolian lamb extra-long lumbar in our master, which went perfectly with the overall textural look we were looking to create for the room.

Lulu and Georgia

Lulu and Georgia is a bohemian fantasyland. It dips its toe into other styles, too, so if boho isn’t your thing, you can still find something amazing. I love that Lulu and Georgia also offers items at all price points, so anyone can shop there. I recently bought their Thea pillow for my husband’s masculine, non-boho office and it pairs perfectly with the Amer leather pillow from The Citizenry (info and photo above). I also have their Luanne pillow on my kitchen window seat, and they were a huge cost savings compared to custom pillows we originally considered.

Custom Pillow Shops

My son’s bedroom. The deep blue pillow is the Bastideaux Bogo in Midnight from Linen + Cloth.

The best thing to happen in the pillow world are online custom pillow shops. Their inventories are great, they often sell pillow sets that take the guesswork out of coordinating pillows, and they’re much more affordable that custom pillows elsewhere. Two great stores to consider are Linen + Cloth, an Etsy shop, and Danielle Oakey Shop.

Below are some of my favorite items at Linen + Cloth, but there really are so many products that it was difficult to choose. I’m highlighting their items specifically because I’ve ordered their products before, and the customer service is great (the owner, Michelle, promptly answered my question regarding pillow color when I was ordering for my son’s room). You can order swatches for a nominal fee and can request custom orders, which means you can get a truly custom pillow made to your specifications at a fraction of the price you’d otherwise pay.

*Note that, other than the sets, prices are base prices and vary based on the size you order.
