So, several years ago, my good friend Amee waxed poetically on and on about her deep and abiding love for Sezane. I’d heard of the brand before — created by a French woman who serendipitously found a suitcase of vintage clothing, then altered and sold them, folding that into a new business of original designs — but I’ve paid more attention since Amee’s verbal love letter. The brand’s commitment to sustainable style and a reasonable price point have won me over in a big way.
This new collection is so casual chic and perfect for fall in a super accessible (and relatively affordable) way. The pandemic has changed the way we all shop; as for me, I find myself buying less fancy stuff, especially fall and winter stuff, because it’s unclear when I’ll be wearing it again. I’m at home with my kids and not working, and if there aren’t social events to plan on, it doesn’t make sense to purchase many dresses and formal items.
So what’s good on Sezane? Everything. But here are my ten favorite things. I especially love the sweaters and belts (that come in all the colors, including gorgeous jewel tones), and I’m absolutely buying that plaid casual jacket and leather pants.
1 Mickey Sweater, $150
So, the oversized half-zip/button seems to be the reigning sweater silhouette of the fall, and I’m here for it. However, I’ve seen it done really poorly all over the place, even by fancy brands. I think this sweater gets it right with the ribbing and big-but-not-comically-oversized buttons. It also comes in a mossy green and muted vintage blue, but I’m pretty into it in the hazelnut color. I’ll will wear it layered above a denim button down and (French) tucked into a pair of belted high-waisted jeans. Also loving this similar style in a jewel-toned sweatshirt.
2 Izzac Coat, $340
This jacket is basically a shacket’s cooler, more mature sibling. I’m getting it and feeling good about it, especially because it is way more affordable than a comparable Veronica Beard coat I was considering (also sourced by another friend named Amy). I’ll purchase it oversized — the website says to just purchase your regular size for that fit and go one size lower for a more fitted silhouette — and layer over shirts, then shirts and sweaters, as the fall turns into early winter. If I’m feeling super crazy, I might pair with my red, white and black Jordan 1s for some tone-on-tone fun.
Not really into the plaid but like the oversized shape and style? There’s a similar denim jacket that’s super adorable, too.
3 Billie Ankle Boots, $285
I mean, do I have a problem if I also purchase these? I just think they’re so western cool without being too cowboy-ish. I think this boot shaft height is the most versatile because it looks great with skirts and pants alike. And a pretty embellished pair of boots for under $300? So good.
4 West Blouse, $120
This shirt feels very Ulla Johnson at a third (fourth?) of the cost. Love the pattern, love the flounces, love all the things.
5 Jack Sneakers, $160
I have an obsession with crisp white leather sneakers, and these Jack Sneakers check all the boxes for me. I especially love the chunky ties. These feel kind of expensive for what are basically glorified Keds, but the heart wants what it wants.
6 Tonio and Francky Trousers, $390 each.
I’m cheating and counting these two as one item because I love them both and refused to choose a favorite. The Tonio pant is cowhide with a high waist and a tapered leg. The Francky is lambskin with an integrated belt with a similar carrot shape. The inseam on the Tonio is slightly shorter. I honestly can’t decide which I like better. I think I prefer the color of the Francky but prefer the waist of the Tonio. Will have to make a decision at some point, but might just have to order both to decide (if so, I’ll report back on my fav). And, leather pants for less than $400 that are appropriate for day or night? Come on! Like the high waist and taper style but not into leather? The Sam Trousers are a great jean version while the black Austin Trousers are perfect for casual or business casual wear.
7 Jeanette Dress, $200
Love this Jeanette shirtdress for fall paired with an oversized cardigan and ankle boots. I actually prefer the dress with the belt included rather than styled with the woven belt. It’s the prefer piece to transition into the cooler months, but wearable in all seasons.
8 Bacall Blouse, $125
I’m a sucker for a delicate white blouse and this Bacall Blouse is a really good one. I’m totally into the delicate guipure lace collar and I want to wear it with the Tonio pants and a cool belt asap. Also comes in black.
9 Scott Trench, $305
A double breasted trench coat should live in your wardrobe. Since it’s a wardrobe staple, this is a place where you could spend a lot of money, but when a $300 trench on looks this good, I’m not sure the extra spending is necessary.
10 Belts! Belts! Belts!, Miscellaneous Prices
Jones Belt, $105 Artemis Belt, $90 Louve Belt, $110 Tamara Belt, $125 Fetiche Belt, $110 Gisele Belt, $125 3. Ellie Belt, $90
Belts are having a major moment right now, and I love all of these. I especially love that all of these options come in a bunch of colors. I think my favorite is the Fetiche Belt in that Camel Croco because it’s totally timeless (the belt also comes in a few other finishes — including smooth and woven options — so you might have to click down to find your favorite), but they’re all really great.
Happy Shopping!
